A free classroom timer that also listens
This timer shows a big countdown on your projector or interactive board. Behind it, the Hush Meter noise meter shows students how loud the room is, so they can see both the time left and their own volume at a glance.
It runs in your web browser. There is nothing to install and no account to create.
How to use the timer
- Pick 1, 3, 5, 10 or 15 minutes from the Timer row. Use +1 and −1 for any other length.
- Press Start. You can pause, add a minute or reset at any time.
- When time is up, the clock flashes and a short chime plays.
- Press Full screen so the whole class can see it.
Play the quiet challenge
Turn on Quiet challenge before you start. The class gets three chances. Each time the room stays above the voice level line, they lose one. If the timer runs out with at least one chance left, the class earns a bonus star.
It works well for independent reading, test prep, clean-up time and transitions. Press Use microphone so the meter can hear the room, or use manual mode to judge the noise yourself.

Your students' privacy
The timer needs no microphone. If you turn the microphone on for the noise meter, sound is measured inside your browser and never recorded, saved or sent anywhere. Read the privacy policy.
Questions teachers ask
Is the classroom timer free?
Yes. The timer, the noise meter and the quiet challenge are free, with no account or sign-up.
Can I use the timer without a microphone?
Yes. The timer works on its own. The microphone is only needed if you want the noise meter and the quiet challenge to react to your room.
Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?
Yes. The timer follows the clock, so it stays accurate when you switch to another tab or window.
Why didn't I hear the chime?
Check that your computer's sound is on and not muted. Browsers only play sound after you click on the page, so the chime is ready once you press Start.
Where is the noise meter on its own?
The full Hush Meter noise meter page has the same tools, with the meter front and center and the timer one click away.
